Librarian Katie's May Favorites

Favorites for May 2011

Me.. Jane by Patrtick McDonnell

This lovely picture book is about Jane Goodall, the famous zoologist. This book tells the story of Jane as a child and her love of animals and science. It's a great story about following your dreams as you see Jane follow hers into becoming a zoologist. This book also features biographical information and photographs of Jane Goodall.

Press Here by Herve Tullet

This book I was told about and is a really fun book. This books requires the reader to press the dots as the book progresses. By pushing on the dots one becomes two and so on. But it takes turns such as on one page by pressing the yellow dots the lights go out. It's a great book to play with when waiting in the doctors office or before dinner time.

Similar Books: There are no Cats in this book by Viviane Schwartz & Can You Make a Scary Face by Jan Thomas

Friends : True Stories of Extradinary Animal Friendships by Catherine Thimmesh

This book tells in simple text the importance of friendship and also showcases peculiar animal friendships. Each page portrays a new friendship and in small text a bit about the animals. It's a really sweet book and it's fun to see the unique pairings.

Similar Book: Little Pink Pup by Johanna Kerby

Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein

Okay so maybe this book didn't come into the library in May but it's definitely worth mentioning. This book tells the story of Papa chicken telling baby chicken a bedtime story except every time baby chicken interrupts. He doesn't just interrupt he changes the story! This is a very funny book and one that will appeal to kids in kindergarten and up.

Dinosaurs!

Arts & Crafts

We made dinosaurs! The paper plates gave the dinosaurs texture and we used metal fasteners to allow the limbs to move.

Mother's Day Craft

For Mother's Day we made cards. The cupcakes were really quick to make and fun to assemble as well. We used old bridal magazines to find colorful cupcake toppers.

Not too much science fiction just a bit

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
Newberry Medal 2010

"Four mysterious letters change Miranda's world forever." Miranda is in the sixth grade and lives in New York City 1978. Slowly her world starts to unravel, her best friend Sal gets punched in the stomach and doesn't want to speak to her anymore. Then the extra apartment key is missing from it's hidden location and she's starting to receive notes.

These mysterious notes are asking Miranda to write a letter and tell everything that happens to her. She keeps receiving notes and "miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet."

The mysterious notes reveal that someone close to her might die a tragic death...
can she prevent it?

Librarian Katie Review:
I enjoyed this book even though I didn't think I would because I normally do not like science fiction. This book has some science fiction, time travel, and it's quirky characters make the story interesting and not old even though the story takes place in the 1970's.

Even though you find out pretty soon into the story that Miranda is receiving notes and someone she knows might die, your still left guessing lots of questions. Who is sending the notes? Who might die? Is this real? Can she figure out what to do? You also get to read about Miranda's life and her friends.
